New Predictors of IVF success

(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- In-vitro fertilization treatments (IVF) yield unpredictable results; the national success rate is between 30 and 40 percent for women under 38 years. New research may identify genetic predictors for the potential outcome for IVF patients.

Dr. Cathy Allan from the Retunda Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, studied the gene expression pattern in RNA taken from the circulating blood. Blood was taken from participants who had both successfully achieved conception through IVF and those who had tried and saw IVF failure.

Dr. Allan identified the specific gene expression profiles in the blood of those who reached success through IVF. She hopes this new research will aid in the development of a test to assist couples with IVF decision making. More research is necessary for the geneses identified as most significant.
